Getting to Know You: Why writing for “inclusion” and not “diversity”?

I don’t like the word diversity. I think it’s a misnomer. Diversity is a default setting. Whether anyone likes it or not, we are diverse. The issue is not and has never been with diversity.

The issue is with inclusion. Human beings are very good at excluding diverse things. Not white? Not welcome. Gay? Get out of here. Muslim? No thanks.

Everyone knows that diversity exists. The hard work is doing something to include our diverse neighbours. I write diverse casts by default. But it’s a choice to be inclusive within my fiction.
