Getting to Know You

Getting to Know You: What books have influenced you the most?

There are a few books that have influenced me greatly in different ways. There are some like the little board books I read as a small child that started my love of books. There are also some children’s novels that have done the same.

In terms of books I find inspirational as an adult, the first is Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. To read about someone who had such strength, tenacity, sheer ability to live was very inspirational to me. Maya Angelou taught me so much about being yourself and about always rising above adversity.

Another book I found very inspirational for a very different reason was Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace. It introduced me to new narrative methods, the unreliable narrator, and just generally amazing writing. It was also my first foray into the historical fiction genre. I’ll never forget: murderess, murderess…

That’s the beauty of books. They inspire in so many different ways. I love it!

  1. I haven’t been able to find a book like that yet. 😞 I mean I’ve found the one that inspired me, the one that is entertaining…but none have really influenced and make me really want take action.
